Healthy Eating

Diet for weight loss:

Healthy eating is something that many of us give little thought to – decadence is more fun, after all. But if your idea of a balanced diet means equal amounts of food to alcohol, you should read this section. As the old saying goes, ‘We are what we eat’: if you eat a lot of lard you tend to look like it. Aesthetics aside, heart disease, high blood pressure and numerous other illnesses are linked to poor eating habits.

If you want to stay healthy you must have a balanced diet.

Try to:

1. Eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables (not including potatoes) a day.
2. Reduce the amount of fat you eat, and replace saturated fats (for example, butter, lard, and suet) with polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats (for example, olive oil and margarine).
3. Reduce the amount of salt you eat.
4. Try to eat oily fish (for example, fresh tuna, salmon, trout, mackerel, and sardines) at least twice a week.
5. Eat plenty of carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, cereals and potatoes).
6. Try to stick to 1–2 units of alcohol a day.
