Grilled Ham and Cheese

The ultimate Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwiches served with a simple homemade Honey Mustard Sauce.

This hot ham and cheese sandwich joins the ranks of my other favorite sandwiches from across the globe, including French Croque Monsieur, Mexican Torta, and Italian Grilled Cheese.

I can confidently say your family will LOVE everything about this Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich, and you will love how easy it is to make! It’s one of our go-to’s for a quick weeknight meal, and the easy honey mustard sauce really takes it over the top!

Ingredients needed:

  • Ham: Use high quality ham from the deli, like black forest, honey, smoked Virginia, or use leftover spiral ham.
  • Cheese: Cheddar cheese, Swiss, provolone, white cheddar, or your favorite kind. Slice the cheese first, giving it time to come to room temperature before grilling the sandwiches (room temperature cheese melts more smoothly).
  • Bread: Any type of bread will work, but if you want it to taste top notch, choose an Artisan or sourdough bread, or even a croissant.
  • Butter: necessary for delicious, golden bread, but if you want a healthier option, non-stick cooking spray on the pan will work.
  • Honey Mustard Sauce (optional): Only takes a minute to make and is DELICIOUS! Spread a thin layer on the bread, or use it just for dipping.

How to make Grilled Ham and Cheese:
  • Make the honey mustard sauce by combining all ingredients in a bowl and stirring until smooth. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use (can be made in advance).
  • Optional: Spread a thin layer of honey mustard sauce on the insides of the bread slices.
  • Layer sandwiches with 3 slices of cheese (or more!) and a slice of ham.
  • Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Butter the outsides of the sandwich bread.
  • Add the sandwich to the hot skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, until golden. Flip to the other side and cook for a few more minutes until cheese is melted and bread is golden brown. Serve warm, with honey mustard sauce for dipping.
